PUBLICATION

graphic design: Kuba Skoczek

The publication in its bilingual form will allow it to broaden its impact in the world.

The contemporary character of the project and the publication itself will strengthen its reach, especially towards the younger generation among which the conscience of Holocaust is worryingly low.

The photographic layer of the project will be completed by the declarations of the people presented in the portraits. The goal of the conversation was to obtain the answer to the question why did they come to the Memorial Place, why did they visit? The artist, through confronting others, challenges himself to answer the question on his own…

The album accompanying the exhibition was published due to the support of Polish-German Cooperation Foundation and Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Krakau.

Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is the most frequently visited museum in Poland. The ”Auschwitz – What Am I Doing Here?” exhibition, coordinated by Pauza Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Contemporary Art, due to the art of dialogue and photography, creates the frame for an open discussion and thought - why do we go there, why do we constantly visit the place which will, nevertheless, not let us forget about it?

The exhibition consists of blurred photographic portraits of the people visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Place and photographs of the architecture of the former Nazi concentration camp. The excerpts from the conversations Mikołaj Grynberg had with those visiting the Museum, the key element and the foundation of the project being exceptional, will be presented as a spacial audio installation.

The main goal of the conversations was to get the answer to the question why do they come to the Memorial Place, „what are they doing there?”. The Artist, through this confrontation, attempted to deal with thes difficult question on his own. The recordings featured in the exhibition were perphormed during actions: at the History Meeting House in Warsaw in June 2010 and at Pauza Gallery in July 2010, in cooperation with radiofonia.
